Coach Hire Drogheda

Drogheda sits at the mouth of the Boyne Valley, so a coach day here usually means the monuments just upstream. The booking that makes or breaks it is the group time slot at Brú na Bóinne.

Newgrange and Knowth start at the visitor centre

No coach drives to Newgrange or Knowth. Every visitor goes by shuttle bus from the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, which has coach parking and is about 10 km, around 15 minutes, from Drogheda. A party of between 15 and 30 people must reserve a group slot in advance. Confirm it first and build the rest of the day around it.

Send us the confirmed slot. The operator will plan to have the group at the visitor centre with time in hand, because a missed slot can be hard to replace on a busy day.

A Boyne Valley circuit

Distances here are short. The Battle of the Boyne site at Oldbridge, with a visitor centre on the 1690 battlefield, is about 6 km west, roughly 10 minutes. Monasterboice, with its high crosses and round tower, is about 10 km and 15 minutes. Slane is about 15 km and 20 minutes. Old Mellifont Abbey, the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland, fits the same circuit.

With so little time on the road, the limit is time on site rather than driving. Three stops and lunch is a full day for most groups. Give the operator the order and the lunch address so the driver knows where to wait.

Coach rules and practicalities in Drogheda

  • Dublin Airport is about 40 km south via the M1, about 30-35 min.
  • The M1 between Gormanston and Monasterboice (around Drogheda) is a tolled section.
  • Brú na Bóinne is reached only by shuttle bus from the visitor centre, which has coach parking; groups of 15-30 must pre-book a group time slot.

Millmount, St Peter's and United Park

Millmount Museum and its Martello Tower overlook the town. St Peter's Church on West Street holds the shrine of St Oliver Plunkett and draws parish and pilgrimage groups. Town-centre coach parking is not listed here; send the addresses and the operator works out where the coach can stop.

Weavers Park, also called United Park, is home to Drogheda United. Visiting supporters' clubs should send the kick-off time and ask where the coach can stop close to the ground.

Dublin Airport, the M1 and Carlingford

Dublin Airport is about 40 km south on the M1, roughly 30 to 35 minutes, which makes Drogheda a practical base for groups flying in. The stretch of the M1 between Gormanston and Monasterboice is tolled; ask for it to appear on the quote.

Carlingford, a medieval village on the lough about 55 km north, around 45 minutes, is the longer outing.

Questions

Can the coach take us up to the Newgrange tomb?

No. Coaches park at the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and visitors continue by shuttle bus. If you number 15 to 30, reserve a group slot ahead.

How far is Drogheda from Dublin Airport?

About 40 km on the M1, around 30 to 35 minutes, through the tolled Gormanston to Monasterboice section.

What does a sensible Boyne Valley day look like?

Brú na Bóinne at your booked slot, then Monasterboice or the battlefield, with lunch in Slane or back in town. None of these is more than 20 minutes from Drogheda.

Can you arrange a pilgrimage visit to St Peter's Church?

Yes. Send the Mass or visit time and the size of the group, and we will get a quote from a partner operator.
