Book Ireland Coach

Midi coach hire

A midi coach carries a mid-size group with its luggage, and it is noticeably shorter than a full coach. On Irish country roads and in small town centres, that difference shows.

How big it is

Typical seating is 29 to 35. The Setra S 511 HD, a compact touring coach, measures 10.47 m. Luggage goes in underfloor bays that are smaller than a full coach's. For a group of thirty with normal cases that is usually enough; for long-haul arrivals with large bags, check the bay space against your count.

Roads and stops where the size helps

A midi coach is easier than a 12 to 14 m coach on narrow rural roads and in town centres. That matters on a country-house avenue, a coastal road or a Medieval Mile. In Kilkenny, coaches park on the east side of Castle Road below the castle. Muckross House near Killarney has separate coach parking. In Ennis, Friar's Walk coach park offers 14 free coach spaces a short walk from the shops.

Still a coach under the rules

Shorter does not mean lighter regulation. The driver needs a category D licence and the vehicle carries a tachograph, exactly as on a full coach. Dublin's bus gates and coach-stop rules treat it the same. One benefit: buses seating more than 25 use the Dublin Port Tunnel without paying a toll, which covers most midi coaches.

Corporate shuttles, golf groups, day tours and wedding guests all suit this size. For about 30 people, a midi coach is often a better fit than a half-empty full coach.

Questions

How many seats does a midi coach have?

Typically 29 to 35, depending on the model. The quote gives the seat count of the vehicle offered.

Does a midi coach need a special driving licence?

Yes, the driver holds a category D licence, the same as for a full-size coach.

Is a midi coach suitable for wedding guests?

Often. Its length helps on narrow avenues to country venues, and its seat range suits a typical guest shuttle.
