Wheelchair-accessible minibus hire

An accessible minibus lets passengers who use wheelchairs travel with the rest of the group rather than separately. Getting the layout right before the day is the whole job.

Layouts and space

Typical capacity is 10 to 16 seats plus wheelchair spaces. The Sprinter Mobility is a Mercedes minibus built for passengers with restricted mobility, and one configuration has 10+1 seats plus 1 wheelchair space. Every wheelchair space reduces the room left for luggage, so a group carrying cases as well as chairs may need a second vehicle for bags. Folded walking frames and spare cushions count as luggage too.

The minibuses in these photos are standard ones, with no lift, ramp or wheelchair spaces shown. Let us know the access you need when you request a quote.

Smaller parties

For one wheelchair user with a companion, an NTA-licensed wheelchair-accessible hackney may be simpler. The licensing rules require room for a wheelchair user and an adult travelling alongside. It is booked in advance like any hackney, and it can reach a front door that a minibus cannot.

  • Luggage: Limited; wheelchair spaces reduce luggage room

Typical features

  • Smaller groups can use NTA-licensed wheelchair-accessible hackneys, built for at least one wheelchair user plus one adult passenger

Who uses it

Care homes and seniors' groups, accessible airport transfers and pilgrimage groups make up much of the demand. When every passenger on board is a vulnerable person, the driver's work falls under the Garda vetting rules; a care home should see that confirmed before the first trip.

Plan each stop for step-free access. Ask venues where the minibus can set down close to the entrance, and whether there is level access from that point. At sites reached only by shuttle, such as Brú na Bóinne or Glenveagh, check the shuttle's access before you book.

Questions

How many wheelchair spaces does an accessible minibus have?

It depends on the configuration. One common Sprinter layout has a single wheelchair space with 10+1 seats; ask for the exact layout on the quote.

Can passengers stay in their wheelchairs during the journey?

That depends on the vehicle and the chair. List each chair, manual or electric, and note who can move across to a fixed seat.

Is there room for luggage?

Limited. Wheelchair spaces take up room that would otherwise hold bags.
