Minibus hire with a driver

A minibus suits a group too big for cars and too small to fill a coach: a club team, a class, a family gathering or a small tour party.

Seats and luggage

Typical seating is 16 to 19. The vehicles are usually Sprinter-based; the Sprinter Travel 75 is 8.5 m long, with a rear luggage compartment of about 2 m³. That is enough for day bags or a modest case each, but not for a full squad's kit plus luggage for a week. If bags are the issue, a midi coach may suit better.

Typical features

  • Sprinter-based minibus; the Sprinter Travel 75 is 8.5 m long
  • Licence category D1 covers up to 16 passengers and 8 m; larger minibuses need a category D licence
  • More than nine seats including the driver means a tachograph is required
  • Buses carrying children must have seat belts or restraints for every child carried

Which licence the driver needs

The line falls at 16 passengers and 8 m. A minibus within both limits is driven on a D1 licence. A 19-seater, or a longer vehicle like the Travel 75, needs a driver with a full category D licence. With more than nine seats including the driver, a tachograph is required. The operator supplies a driver with the right category, provided the passenger count you give is accurate.

Carrying children

For school groups and juvenile teams, a bus carrying children must have seat belts or restraints for every child carried. Confirm the seat count covers every child and adult, and brief the group on belts before setting off.

Getting around

A minibus reaches hotel doors, club grounds and car parks that a full coach cannot, and it turns in tight village streets. It does not qualify for the Dublin Port Tunnel exemption, which applies to buses seating more than 25. Ask where the driver can wait if the group will be several hours at one stop.

Questions

How many passengers fit in a minibus?

Usually 16 to 19, depending on the vehicle. The quote gives the seat count of the minibus offered.

Is a D1 licence enough to drive a 19-seat minibus?

No. D1 covers up to 16 passengers and 8 m; a larger minibus needs category D.

Does a minibus have a tachograph?

Yes, when it has more than nine seats including the driver's.
