Executive van with a driver

An executive people carrier moves a family or a small party together, with room for bags and the comfort of a car. It is the step between an executive saloon and a minibus.

Seats and bags

This class covers the Mercedes V-Class and similar vans. The V-Class seats a maximum of 8 occupants, the driver included, which leaves up to 7 passengers, and seating can be benches, separate seats or luxury seats depending on the vehicle. Rear luggage space is good with fewer rows in use and much smaller with every seat taken. Seven adults with large suitcases, or a group with golf bags, may need a minibus or a second van.

How it is licensed

Hired with up to 8 passengers, the van must be an NTA-licensed hackney or limousine, booked ahead at a fare settled before the journey. It cannot be flagged down on the street like a taxi. Ask the operator to confirm the vehicle's licence type on the quote, and keep it with the booking.

Above 8 passengers the vehicle changes category: a group of that size needs a bus or minibus run under a Road Passenger Transport Operator Licence.

Typical features

  • Mercedes-Benz V-Class seats up to 8 occupants, including the driver, so up to 7 passengers

Trips that suit it

Executive airport transfers, families arriving with luggage, small golf groups and small VIP parties all fit here. The van stops where a car can, which on a hotel forecourt, a country lane or a busy terminal set-down is often where a coach cannot. For a two-day itinerary with several stops, it keeps a small group together without paying for empty coach seats, and the same driver can stay with the party between stops.

Questions

How many passengers does an executive van carry?

Up to 7. The exact count depends on the layout, so check it on the quote against your group; eight or more need a minibus.

Is the van licensed like a taxi?

It must be an NTA-licensed hackney or limousine, which is pre-booked with the fare agreed beforehand.

Will luggage for seven people fit?

Often not with every seat in use. Tell the operator the number and size of bags.
